1994 international beach clean up exercise at the bar beach Lagos, Nigeria. OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F.; Folorunsho, R.; Isebor, C.; Adegbie, A.T.; Dublin-Green, C.O..
At the request of the United States of America Centre for Marine Conservation, the Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research organised a beach clean up at the Bar Beach Lagos on September 24 1994. An International beach clean up is usually held on the last Saturday of every September during the COASTWEEK. On this day, volunteers all over the world participate in a beach clean up in an effort to collect data and information on the types and amounts of debri littering the world's beaches. Volunteers for the Bar Beach clean up of 1994 were drawn from all works of life and some Federal and States agencies. A total of 10,872 pieces of different kinds of debri weighing 531.1kg were collected during the clean up. Further analysis of the different...

2nd Joint GOSUD/SAMOS Workshop, U.S.Coast Guard Base, Seattle, Washington, 10-12 June 2008. OceanDocs
On 10-12 June 2008, the NOAA Climate Observation Division sponsored the 2nd Joint Global Ocean Surface Underway Data (GOSUD)/Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System (SAMOS) Workshop in Seattle, WA, USA. The workshop focused on the ongoing collaboration between GOSUD and SAMOS and addressing the needs of the research and operational community for highquality underway oceanographic and meteorological observations from ships. The SAMOS initiative is working to improve access to calibrated, quality-controlled, surface marine meteorological data collected in-situ by automated instrumentation on research vessels (primarily) and select merchant ships. GOSUD is an IODE project which focuses on the collection, quality evaluation, and...

A 4-years' analysis of the meiofauna community of a dumping site for TiO2-waste off the Dutch coast OMA
Smol, N.; Huys, R.; Vincx, M..
Sublittoral meiofauna of 24 stations was monitored over 4 years (1984-1987) in and around a dumping site for TiO2- acid waste in the Southern Bight of the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The meiofauna was examined quantitatively and qualitatively with special reference to the nematode and the copepod community structure down to species level and to the trophic structure of the nematodes. Biological, sedimentological, geographical parameters and the concentration of several heavy metals were subject to multivariate statistical analysis and classification techniques to evaluate the impact of the TiO2- dumping activities. The meiofauna is dominated by nematodes, copepods, gastrotrichs and turbellarians. There is a...

A active wave generating-absorbing boudary condition for VOF type numerical model OMA
Troch, P.; De Rouck, J..
The objective of the present work is to discuss the implementation of an active wave generating–absorbing boundary condition for a numerical model based on the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method for tracking free surfaces. First an overview of the development of VOF type models with special emphasis in the field of coastal engineering is given. A new type of numerical boundary condition for combined wave generation and absorption in the numerical model VOFbreak2 is presented. The numerical boundary condition is based on an active wave absorption system that was first developed in the context of physical wave flume experiments, using a wave paddle. The method applies to regular and irregular waves. Velocities are measured at one location...

A Biodiversity Reference Center in Ghana for West African Fresh and Brackish-Water Fishes OceanDocs
Gourene, G.; Provost, P.; Teugels, G.G.; Fermon, Y.; Bailly, N.; Meunier, F.; Abban, E.K..
Renewable natural resources (RNR) are a major source of socio-economic development potential in all developing countries, if they can be conserved, developed and sustainably exploited. For strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation strategies to be implemented, a knowledge of biodiversity at various levels within these RNR has to be investigated and documented in an internationally accepted manner, and preferably as close as possible to the habitat of the resources. However, human and material resources available in developing countries are currently neither sufficiently trained nor sufficient to undertake the appropriate studies. Meanwhile, various forces continue to deplete RNR and their inherent biodiversity. An attractive approach towards...

A Bio-Economic Assessment of the West Coast Deep-Sea Hake Fishery with Referede to the Optimal Utitlization and Management of the Resource. OceanDocs
Hutton, T.; Sumaila, U.R..
The cooperative versus non-cooperative management of the South African west coast hake stock is explored using game theoretic modelling in conjunction with an age-structured model. The age-structured model is used to produce a physical flow account for input into national resource accounts. Between 1989 and 1998, the average catch of hake on the west coast was 92000 tons, most of which was harvested by the demersal trawl sector. The physical flow account indicates that the conservative re-building management strategy pursued for the fishery over the same time period mentioned above, has resulted in a 29% increase in the demersal trawl catch over the last decade. We simulated the effects of alternative quota restrictions on two fishing sectors (the...

A box-model of metal flows through the Scheldt estuary (1981-1983 and 1992-1995) OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Monteny, F.; Van Ryssen, R.; Leermakers, M..
The behaviour of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the Scheldt estuary was investigated in the periods 1981 to 1993 and 1995. The Hg behaviour was studied between 1992 and 1994. A box model was used to establish the relationship between the trace metal inputs and the fate of these pollutants in the Scheldt estuary. Annual budgets were calculated for particulate and dissolved trace metals. For Hg, seasonal budgets of the various species (inorganic Hg, methylmercury, Hg°) could also be calculated. These budgets allow an evaluation of the consistency of each individual flux or process, such as the inputs of the various metals into the North Sea, the sedimentation flux of particulate metals in the area of high turbidity, the evasional fluxes and the formation rates of...
